Tidbits


A data security survey conducted by Staples reveals the following about IT managers:
o 60% are concerned about security threats
o 70% said that if security threat shut them down for one day it would significantly impact their business
o 40% use external IT help
o 40% do not have email security policies in place
o 40% have not yet changed passwords associated with some departed employees

Even though the CBS TV report on copier hard drives ran on 4/19/2010, local TV stations and newspapers are still repeating the story. For example, this past week, the Time Herald-Record of New York ran an article stating; “nearly every copier made since 2002 store copies of every image on an internal hard drive”

Canon CEO, Fujio Mitarai, stated “We think the yen will remain strong for quite a while, and that put us in a crisis mode”, in an attempt to explain why he is considering moving more manufacturing from Japan to China to cut labor costs.

Many business are now thinking seriously about upgrading to Microsoft Windows 7 operating system according to a poll conducted by silicon.com. (thus they will most likely need devices that have Windows XPS drivers):
o 37% will upgrade within next year
o 9% will upgrade in next 90 days
o 10% will upgrade in next 180 days
o 18% in next 12 months
o 22% have already started upgrade
o 27% will upgrade in next 24-36 months
o 13% stated they don’t want to upgrade

Copier fraud. The Transport Workers Union Local 100 of New York, stripped Mr. Izzy Rivera of his official duties when they found out that he signed a lease for a couple of Xerox copiers. The lease was for $120,000 per year, and order was given to his live-in girlfriend, Lizette Baumgartner, who works for a Xerox agency.

Former Xerox researchers, John Warnock & Charles Geschke, were awarded the 2010 Marconi Prize for entrepreneurial leadership. The two invented PostScript while at Xerox (which the company did not pursue), and left to start Adobe Corp. Both are now retired.

Xerox’s CEO, Ursula Burns, was asked about how its facilities management division competes with its printshop customers that buy Xerox copiers:
o Was trying to “back up and focus on the customer”
o “If you get there first, it’s yours”
o “We have very little interest in taking away a big Xerox customer’s business”

Brother announced that for a second time a federal judge dismissed a class action suit alleging that Brother cheated its customers out of toner by making printers that shut printing down and forced end users to replace the toner cartridge even if it was not yet empty.

Scott Arthur Waddell of Raleigh, NC was sentenced to 51 months in prison for stealing more than $1 million from US Bank, Marlin Leasing, Leasing One, CIT, & SunTrust Bank by turning in fraudlent copier lease deals. His copier dealership was named Modern Office Solutions.

HIPAA data breach. Jasmine Smith, a former employee of Johns Hopkins Hospital, was arrested and charged with stealing social security numbers from patients and giving them to friends who used the info to get credit cards, and purchase $600,000 worth of goods. She faces up to 30 years in prison.

A survey of 710 medical college students reveal that 70% expect their future employers to have a fully implemented EHR system.

By 2015, one year after health reforms will take effect in the U.S., the Association of American Medical Colleges predicts that there will be a physician shortage of roughly 63,000 doctors.

According to study conducted by Health Affairs, only 11.9% of hospitals in 2009 had EHR systems, and only 2% had systems that comply with new law.

EFI announced it won a $2.4 million contract from the Department of Defense for its Digital StoreFront web-to-print software. The contract awarded by DLA Document Services (formerly known as DAPS), and will be used by 150 locations.

Only 6.7% of physicians use email to communicate with their patients according to survey from Center for Studying Health System Change. More:
o Only 34.5% were equipped to handle email about clinical info with patients
o 76.6% have electronic access to lab tests
o 56.8% had electronic access to patient notes
o 42.2% had electronic access to prescribing tools

37 people in the U.S. and 19 in England were arrested for using the Zeus malware to steal identities of unsuspecting computer users.
