-The Managed Print Services Association (MPSA) announced a management change:
o Jim Fitzpatrick of Okidata, has resigned as association president, and is now on Board of Directors – Manufacturer Representative
o Ken Stewart, of Photizo Group, has resigned as member of board of directors, and is now on Standards Committee
o Joe Barganier was elected interim president, and is currently working for MT Business Technologies of Ohio as manager of Total Output Management offering.

-According to survey from College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME):
o 15% of hospital CIOs are confident that they will have EHR installed by April, 2011
o 5% expect to meet meaningful use targets in first 6 months

-According to “GreenOrder”, a sustainable business strategy firm:
o Copier sales in US are worth $24 billion annually
o Older copiers use up to 60% more energy than new models
o Average office worker creates 1.5 pounds of paper waste each day
o Recycled paper uses 44% less energy and produces 48% less waste
o More than 100 million cartridges end up in trash each year in US
o Cartridges take up to 450 years to decompose
o Toner remanufacturing employs 35,000 in the US
o Reconditioning cartridges saves 264 gallons of oil and 845 lbs. of solid waste each month
o Fewer than 10% of all electronics discarded are recycled each year in US

-When asked about offering managed print services, Epson executive, Chris Price, stated; “I don’t think we can be that bullish. We are probably finding it as equally tough, mainly because in MPS customers are looking for a suite of products or services as opposed to what we offer…”

-In a cost cutting move, Ricoh announced it is shrinking its wholesale division from 4 regions to only 2:
o Ricoh dealer division employees were instructed to call in to a special phone number and received one of two pre-recorded messages:
 Your position has been eliminated
 Your position had changed
o Mark Conant (east) and John Stewart (west) are two RVPs left
o The district sales managers will now support all Ricoh, Savin & Lanier dealers, rather than having separate personnel for each brand

-According to survey conducted by MSPmentor 100, only 20% of managed IT services providers provide managed print services.

o Grew from $20 billion in 2008 to $24 billion in 2009
o Will be $68 billion by 2014
o 24% compound annual growth rate
o Double digit growth projected for next 5 years

-IDC announced that 31 million printers/MFPs were shipped in the third quarter of 2010 worldwide.o total value of $14.3 billion
o 38% growth in b/w MFPs
o 21% growth in color MFPs
o 35% growth in b/w laser printers
o 5% growth in color laser printers
o HP shipped 3.5 million laser units
o 20 million inkjet units shipped, up 6%
o 6.8 million units total shipped in US, up 3%

-In a recent survey of printshops, the average selling price of a letter size color copy was 42 cents.

-Lexmark announced that it has named Ray Belanger, CEO of Bay Copy of Rockland, MA to its dealer advisory council. Ray joined 11 other dealers on the council for a two day meeting at Lexmark headquarters in Kentucky. As part of the meeting, Lexmark took the 12 members for a tour of the WinStar Farm race horse facility.

-Xerox announced it will spend $25 million to expand its EA polymerized toner plant in Webster, NY.
o Will increase production by 50% as more models in product line use this toner instead of pulverized toner
o Original plant opened in 2007
o Has 20 miles of pipe
o Has 4,000 sensors that track temperature, humidity and air flow
o Original investment was $60 million
o Expansion will be complete at end of 2011
o Will add 10 employs to total of 75
o Claims that it has 300 patents related to toner

-EHR usage survey. Survey conducted by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reveals:
o More than half of physicians surveyed are using at least a partial EHR system in their practices
o Nearly a quarter have a system in place that meets criteria for basic EHR system
o 10% have fully functional EHR in place

-Steve Wozniak, one of the original founders of Apple Computer gave speech at the new Computer History Museum:
o Had offered his original design for Apple 1 computer to HP 5 times, but was turned down each time
o HP co-founder Bill Hewlett reportedly said afterwards; “you win some, you lose some”
o At recent auction last week in London, someone paid $174,000 for an original Apple 1 computer in working condition
o Steve also invented Pong, an early video game

-Google announced release of beta version of Google Cloud Printing. Details:
o lets users print from anywhere without print drivers
o computer in use must have Windows XP, 7 or Vista
o end user downloads Google Chrome OS and Google Cloud Print Connector
o Can print to web-connected printers
o Google hopes that printer and MFP vendors will produce cloud-aware printer that support Google Cloud Printing out of the box

-According to survey of EHR usage in pediatric hospitals conducted by Archives of Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine:
o 2.8% have a comprehensive EHR system
o 17.9% have a basic EHR system
o 15.7% exchange health info electronically
o 34.3% have CPOE (computerized physician order entry) systems

-Heidelberg announced that in Australia it will resell the Konica Minolta bizhub PRESS C6000 and C7000 models.

-The Federal Reserve announced that while it printed 1.1 billion redesigned $100 bills, a large number of them were not printed correctly, and will have to be quarantined, sorted and burned. The cost of the mistake is estimated at $120 million.
